Lyrics meaning

The speaker meets Michel, an old acquaintance who appears physically weakened and isolated. He believes Michel is dependent on “the white,” a slang reference to cocaine, and sees the drug taking over his friend’s life. The speaker moves between concern, mockery, and frustration. By the end, his anger gives way to a rough expression of loyalty: he says he would confront Michel’s dealer, even while admitting that this could put him in danger.

Several images make Michel’s condition vivid. His “hollow cheeks” and unsteady walk suggest the physical effects of hardship or drug use. The repeated phrase “the white” gives the drug a simple, almost ordinary name, while the song’s repetition shows how strongly it dominates Michel’s attention. “Powder in your eyes” also plays on the idea of cocaine powder and the familiar expression “to pull the wool over someone’s eyes,” though here it points to Michel’s visibly affected appearance.

The speaker presents himself as healthier and more alive, but he is not a reliable judge of others: he drinks and smokes, and he uses jokes to hide discomfort. His offer of friendship is sincere, yet mixed with harshness and a violent threat. The final image of “four white boards” suggests coffins, but it is unclear whether the speaker means the dealer, himself, or both could die.
