Lyrics meaning

The song presents “civilization” as a bitterly ironic force. In each verse, the speaker imagines a freer, more peaceful world before “they” arrived, then lists the restrictions and violence that followed. The repeated refrain, calling them “the monkeys of my neighborhood,” gives the song a mocking, angry tone. Its emotional movement grows darker: the complaints begin with confinement and censorship, then turn to persecution, exploitation, and mass killing.

Several images make this criticism vivid. A flower “in a pot” and a bird “in a cage” suggest that living things have been controlled and stripped of freedom; people reduced to “numbers” are treated like entries in a system. The repeated claim that these changes made people “civilized” is sarcastic: prisons, persecution, and weapons are presented as signs of progress only in name. The contrast between “reason of state” and “reason” suggests that governments may use official logic to justify brutality.

The song’s “they” is deliberately broad, and “monkeys” may be an insult aimed at people who behave cruelly while claiming superiority. The verses make sweeping claims about an innocent past, which may be poetic exaggeration rather than a literal account of history. The lyrics can therefore be read less as praise of an earlier world than as a challenge to the idea that modern systems and technology automatically make human beings more humane.
