The lyrics move between religious wonder and painful human experience. They begin with a mysterious musical chord and a king’s praise, then turn toward desire, love, and loss. By the end, “Hallelujah” no longer sounds only joyful or certain: it is also a word someone might sing while hurt or disappointed.

Several images mix sacred and ordinary life. The “secret chord” suggests music that can feel spiritually powerful, while “the fourth, the fifth” and “minor” and “major” refer to musical notes and changes in mood. The woman who “broke your throne” and “cut your hair” may represent love or desire that strips away someone’s power. A “cold and broken Hallelujah” makes praise sound fragile rather than triumphant.

The song’s meaning is deliberately mixed. It draws on a biblical story in which a king sees a woman bathing, but it also shifts into a speaker describing a troubled relationship. The lines about love and violence may suggest that experience has made the speaker wary, though they need not be taken as a literal account. The repeated word can express faith, grief, longing, or all of these at once.
