Lyrics meaning

The speaker describes a dramatic change in himself: once proud and tough, he now behaves meekly because he is captivated by a woman. He presents this surrender as both comic and troubling. His devotion grows into obedience, while the relationship seems to involve jealousy and danger as well as attraction.

The repeated image of becoming “small” before a doll suggests that the speaker feels powerless and childlike around her. The doll-like figure may be a teasing way to describe the woman, not a literal toy: she closes her eyes when laid down and makes a “Mama” sound when touched. The contrast between her “milk teeth” when smiling and “wolf teeth” when angry makes her seem sweet one moment and threatening the next. “A fine trickster” is an idiom-like description of someone clever at winning another person over.

The song’s humor does not make the relationship harmless. The speaker says a pretty periwinkle flower died after he admired it, implying that his jealous partner may have killed it with her umbrella. Fortune-tellers predict his “last torment” in her arms, but he accepts the risk with a shrug: there may be worse fates elsewhere. This could be read as playful exaggeration about being in love, or as a darker portrait of willingly submitting to a possessive, dangerous partner.
