This Masquerade

The song describes two people who remain together but feel emotionally distant. They try to talk about their relationship, yet cannot say what they mean or reach real understanding. The speaker considers leaving, but seeing the other person’s eyes brings back affection and hesitation. The mood is therefore conflicted: loneliness and frustration sit alongside attachment and a wish to stay.

A “masquerade” is a performance in which people wear masks. Here, it may suggest that the couple hides their true feelings or keeps acting as if the relationship is working, even while feeling disconnected. The “lonely game” similarly makes their relationship sound like a repeated pattern that neither person knows how to stop. Saying the words “got in the way” suggests that talking does not bring them closer; their attempts to explain themselves may instead deepen the distance.
