Lyrics meaning
The speaker addresses a lover who is leaving for someone else. At first, he sounds controlled: he says he already knows the truth and will not stop the departure. Beneath that calmness, however, are hurt and resentment. As the song develops, he reveals that he has known about the other relationship for a long time and had hoped the lover would reconsider. By the end, his concern for the new partner mixes with a boastful warning.
The repeated claim that the lover “looks so much like me” suggests the speaker believes he understands the lover’s behavior because he recognizes something of himself in it. The “fool” who loves the departing partner is portrayed as unaware of the pain ahead. The warning that there is “no excuse after being warned” means that once someone has been cautioned, they cannot say they did not know the risk. The speaker’s claim that the rival lacks what he himself has sounds like a competitive boast, though the lyrics do not explain exactly what he means.
The speaker may genuinely be trying to protect the new partner, but he may also be protecting his pride by presenting himself as wiser and more desirable. His calm acceptance is therefore not simple forgiveness: it coexists with jealousy and a wish to have the final word. The song leaves open whether his confidence is justified or simply a way to manage the pain of being left.
