Was a long time ago
At least two weeks or more
I went back down to Mississippi
To see my kin
I looked all around
Old Clark's there town
It was cotton pickin' time again
It was down there in the bottom
Round highway 49
I left my suitcase behind
Now I'm goin' up the road
Towards Memphis town
I can't help it if I'm Memphis bound
We pulled into Memphis
It was late in the day
We had us a bottle on the way
It was down in some juke joint
Name I can't recall
Well people they was having a ball
It was down there in the bottom
Me and my friends
Got locked in the jail house again
Now it's too late for the train
Too early for the Greyhound
I can't help it if I'm Memphis bound
Say goodbye to Memphis
For me if you please
This city has me down on my knees
I'm gone, I'm gone
You know I won't come back
Till that mail train takes me
On down the track
I can't help it if I'm Memphis
Can't help it if I'm Memphis
Can't help it if I'm Memphis bound
