I knew a man Bojangles
And he danced for you
In worn out shoes
With silver hair, a ragged shirt
And bare ragged pants, the old soft shoe
He jumped so high, he jumped so high
And then he lightly touched down
ย
I met him in a New Orleans caffee
He was down and out
He looked at me to be the weary eyes of age
As he spoke right out
He talked of life, he talked of life
He laughed and slapped his leg a step
ย
Mr. Bojangles, Mr. Bojangles
Mr. Bojangles, dance
ย
He said, "Now and then I dance at honky tonks
For drink and tips
But most of the time
I spend behind these county bars"
He said, "You know, I drinks a bit"
He shook his head
And as he shook his head
He just nodded, please
Mr. Bojangles, Mr. Bojangles
Mr. Bojangles, dance
ย
He said again, "I dance every now an then
For drinks and tips"
He spoke of years
A fifteen years of how his dog and he
Travelled down across the South for a bit
His dog up and died, he just up and died
After twenty years he still grieved (That's him)
Mr. Bojangles, Mr. Bojangles
Mr. Bojangles, dance
