Baggy Trousers

The lyrics present school life as noisy, rebellious, and full of mischief. The children break things, ignore rules, and find ways to make ordinary days exciting. The repeated chorus looks back with mixed feelings: school seemed unpleasant at the time, but the memories may now feel funny or enjoyable.

Several details create a picture of unruly childhood. “Bend not break the rules” suggests learning how to get around rules without openly defying them. The baggy trousers and dirty shirt are simple signs of scruffy, carefree children. “Passing round the ready rub” is a playful, unclear phrase in the lyrics; it may suggest the teachers’ own habits, but its exact meaning is uncertain.

The song is affectionate, but not purely nostalgic: it admits that the children’s behavior could be disruptive, and that school felt bad while they were living through it. The question “did it really turn out bad?” leaves room for doubt rather than giving a firm answer. The lyrics may be laughing at both the children and the adults, while suggesting that difficult experiences can later become amusing memories.
