The speaker presents himself as a powerful force that exploits people while claiming to guide or protect them. Several images show how power is maintained. The “outstretched grasping hand” suggests greed and taking, while a crown made of deceit makes authority seem built on lies. The repeated idea of leading people to their graves reverses the promise of a noble destiny: what sounds like a heroic mission is really a path to destruction. “Sycophant” means someone who flatters a powerful person to gain favor, so the word points to people who keep serving even when they are harmed.

The speaker’s identity is deliberately broad and shifting.
