The lyrics question the promise that constant effort will make a person wiser, more successful, or happier. The speaker describes trying to improve and accumulating experiences, yet feeling no closer to a different life. The repeated call to “keep yourself alive” sounds both like encouragement to endure and a reminder that mere survival may be all anyone can guarantee.

The “million rivers” and “million miles” suggest enormous effort and long journeys, but the speaker still ends up where they began.
