Lyrics meaning
The lyrics describe someone suffering after a separation. Heartache is presented as a physical illness: the speaker feels weak, has a sore throat and headache, and cannot enjoy karaoke. The repeated complaints make the pain sound comic as well as serious. At first, the speaker seems to hope that medicine—or the absent person—can bring relief. Later, the thought of enduring many more lonely nights makes the sadness feel larger and harder to escape.
Several images mix romance with everyday medical language. Calling someone “my chewing gum” suggests a person who might comfort or occupy the speaker, while “special medicine” makes love sound like a cure. The medicine being delayed in Los Angeles, with flights arriving late, turns emotional relief into a frustrating delivery problem. “My memories have grown with compound interest” suggests that missing someone accumulates and becomes more costly over time. The washing-machine comparison exaggerates the speaker’s bodily distress in a deliberately absurd way.
The lyrics leave room to wonder how much of the illness is literal and how much is a humorous expression of grief. The speaker even imagines telling a doctor that the symptoms began because of this person, but cannot quite explain it. The repeated “how can I tell the doctor?” ending makes the problem seem both real to the speaker and difficult to describe in ordinary medical terms.
