Lyrics meaning
The speaker waits alone through a long night for a boat carrying the woman he loves. At first, he imagines they will reunite and sail together to New York, where they will build a life. As the boat is delayed, hope gives way to doubt: he wonders if she has lied or said goodbye for good. He falls asleep, and when he wakes, the boat is already leaving. The song moves from longing and romantic expectation to disappointment and loss.
The rum is more than a drink: sipping it seems to help the speaker endure the wait, though it may also blur his judgment and contribute to his falling asleep. The repeated โHavana moonโ gives the scene a lonely, dreamy feeling, while the moon, tide, and wind make the night seem slow and unsettled. His imagined โhome up in the skyโ may suggest a very tall New York building, but it also makes their hoped-for future sound almost dreamlike.
The ending leaves some uncertainty. The woman appears to have arrived and to have waited until dawn, then wept and gone home; the speaker, meanwhile, slept through the reunion. So the separation may not mean she deceived himโhis suspicion comes while he is discouraged and alone. The missed meeting feels like a painful accident, though the lyrics do not explain exactly why she leaves without him.
