Lead Me On

The lyrics describe a speaker drawn toward someone whose feelings are difficult to read. The repeated request to “lead me on” suggests a desire for guidance or closeness, but it also carries uncertainty: the speaker feels caught between wanting to break free and continuing to follow. As the song develops, that uncertainty becomes more hopeful, with the speaker expressing belief in “you and me” and a wish to find answers together.

Several images make the relationship feel like a journey through confusion. A “crowded place” and a “guarded face” suggest being near someone while still unable to understand them. The bridge leading into “the shadows of the night” can represent moving into an uncertain situation. “Victim of a dream and a memory” implies that the speaker may be held by an idealized past or by hopes that are not fully grounded in the present.

The phrase “lead me on” is deliberately ambiguous. It can mean “show me where to go” or “keep drawing me in,” but in everyday English it can also mean misleading someone with false hope. The lyrics do not settle which meaning is intended: the speaker may knowingly accept uncertainty because the connection feels meaningful, or may be asking for reassurance from someone whose intentions remain unclear.
