Come mai

The speaker describes being unexpectedly consumed by love. Before this person arrived, he seemed independent and dismissive of romance; now he spends long nights waiting and hopes for a positive answer. The emotional movement is from confidence and distance to surprise, longing, and helplessness. He knows this change is happening, but cannot explain why he feels so strongly.

Several images make the feelings vivid. He carries the night home and turns it into a melody, suggesting that late hours and private thoughts become material for writing. “Kilometers of letters” is an exaggeration for writing a great many messages or letters. The “daily war with rationality” presents his mind as divided: logic tells him to stay in control, while his feelings keep drawing him toward the person. Sitting alone and “praying for a yes” shows how much he depends on the other person’s response.

The repeated questions—“How come?” and “Who are you?”—sound less like requests for factual answers than expressions of amazement and confusion. The speaker both resists his new vulnerability and accepts it, saying the struggle is worthwhile if it helps him come out of himself. His waiting may suggest intense devotion, but it may also hint at romantic idealization: he seems focused on the hope of a reply more than on what the other person feels.
