Evidence Of Autumn

The lyrics describe a relationship remembered across time. At first, the woman seems to transform a lonely life, bringing happiness and making the speaker appear fortunate to others. Then she disappears, leaving a note and causing sudden disbelief and intense pain. Years later, the hurt has faded, but the memory still affects him. The emotional movement is from joy, through shock and loss, to a quieter, lingering attachment.

The country lane, green and brown clothing of the landscape, and “recent rain” create a calm autumn scene. Autumn can suggest a season of change or decline, echoing the relationship’s movement toward an ending, though the image may simply set the scene. Calling the woman “like an angel” presents her as a source of comfort and light, not necessarily as a literal ideal. The phrase “turn your head” means that she strongly attracts attention or moves someone emotionally.

The speaker admits that he can hardly recall her face or form, yet her memory remains. This contrast suggests that what lasts may be the feeling she gave him, rather than a clear picture of who she was. The repeated claim that she made everything feel right may express genuine gratitude, but it could also reflect how memory simplifies a complicated relationship. The lyrics leave the reasons for her departure unexplained.
