Be Yourself

The lyrics place people in very different situations: loneliness, grief, love, hope, and escape. Their experiences may be joyful or painful, but the repeated message is that a person can only live as themselves. Near the end, the song becomes reassuring: even after hardship and uncertainty, the listener is urged not to lose sleep over what may happen.

Several images show how different lives can be. A bouquet caught in a chapel yard suggests a wedding or a hopeful beginning, while white roses placed on a grave suggest mourning and an ending. These scenes sit side by side, emphasizing that happiness and sorrow are both part of life. “Falls to pieces” is an idiom meaning someone feels emotionally overwhelmed; “kills the pain” means trying to numb or escape suffering.

The advice to “be yourself” can sound like a call to accept one’s nature rather than hide or imitate others. Still, it does not promise that being authentic will lead to success: the lyrics admit that a person may “win or lose.” The line may therefore offer acceptance more than a solution. The contrasting descriptions of people also leave open whether differences bring them together or keep them apart.
