Muskrat Love

The song presents a playful romance between two muskrats, Susie and Sam. It begins with them enjoying an evening out and dancing together, then shifts to courtship: Sam asks Susie to marry him, and she accepts. The mood stays light, affectionate, and gently comic, as their dancing turns into cozy closeness.

The candlelight and “doing the town” suggest a date-night atmosphere, while the jitterbug and tango make the pair’s courtship feel like a lively dance. “Floatin’ like the heavens above” is an exaggerated image of romantic happiness: they seem carried away by joy. “Ticklin’ her fancy” is an idiom meaning to please or attract her, not necessarily to tickle her literally.

The lyrics make the animals’ behavior resemble human dating, using ordinary details such as bacon and cheese to keep the scene amusing and homely. Their kisses and playful affection suggest intimacy, but the song does not describe it seriously or explicitly. Its repeated dancing may represent the couple’s excitement and closeness, while also keeping the story in a whimsical, almost nursery-rhyme style.
