You Can Get It If You Really Want

The song is an encouraging message about pursuing a goal through effort and persistence. Its repeated promise that success is possible gives the lyrics a confident, uplifting mood, while references to hardship acknowledge that progress may be difficult. The emotional movement is from motivation to reassurance: setbacks are expected, but the singer urges the listener not to give up.

Several images make this message clear. “Rome was not built in a day” is a familiar saying meaning that important achievements take time. “Opposition will come your way” suggests that obstacles or people who disagree may appear along the path. The idea that a “hotter” battle brings a “sweeter” victory compares struggle to a hard fight: overcoming greater difficulty can make success feel more rewarding. “Get your share” can imply claiming a fair chance at the outcome one has worked for.

The repeated line about getting what you want sounds certain, but the condition to “try, try and try” makes success depend on continued effort. The lyrics are optimistic rather than a guarantee that every dream will come true. They may be read as encouragement to keep working toward a goal, even when circumstances are discouraging, while leaving open how much success depends on effort versus factors beyond one’s control.
