Lyrics meaning

The lyrics contrast a forgiving, open attitude in youth with a tougher response to a changing world. At first, the speaker recalls someone who believed people should live as they choose. But when life becomes painful and makes that person “give in and cry,” the advice changes: accept what has happened and move on. The mood shifts from gentle tolerance to blunt determination.

“An open book” suggests someone who is honest, trusting, and emotionally open. The phrase “live and let live” means allowing others to make their own choices without interference. Changing it to “live and let die” sounds deliberately harsher: it may mean letting go of people or situations that cannot be saved, rather than trying to control everything. “Give the other fella hell” is an informal expression meaning to challenge or fight hard against someone, especially while doing a job.

The song’s message is not completely clear-cut. “Live and let die” could express emotional self-protection, a willingness to accept loss, or a more aggressive attitude toward life. The line about doing a job well adds a practical, forceful note, but it does not explain exactly what the job is. This leaves the listener to decide whether the speaker is offering resilience or encouraging a colder way of facing change.
