Joe

The lyrics remember a person named Joe through small, personal scenes from the past. The speaker recalls feeling lonely, then feeling comforted and happy in Joe’s company. The repeated memories suggest that Joe remains important, even though the relationship belongs to an earlier time. By the end, the tone feels tender and nostalgic rather than openly sad.

The golden hay fields create a bright, peaceful picture of shared time outdoors. Sitting on Joe’s knees or by the fire suggests closeness and safety, while the mention of childhood fears points to a vulnerable younger self. “I see you in the summer” may mean the speaker imagines Joe in a familiar seasonal setting, or that summer itself brings the memory back. “Transfixed” means so absorbed that one cannot look away; here, it hints at the strong effect Joe had on the speaker.

The lyrics do not explain who Joe is or exactly what happened between them. The memories could be of a family member, a friend, or someone else who offered comfort, so a more specific relationship would be guesswork. “Away” may suggest distance or absence, but its meaning is unclear. The song can be heard as a gentle act of remembering, with warmth and gratitude alongside a sense of loss.
