Black Is Black

The speaker is heartbroken because his partner has left, and he wants her to return. The mood moves between intense sadness and brief attempts to convince himself that things are fine. Those moments of confidence do not last: the song returns to his longing and uncertainty.

“Black” and “grey” describe how the world feels to him after the separation, rather than simply naming colors. “I’m feeling blue” is an English expression for feeling sad. Together, these color images make his emotional state easy to picture. “I want my baby back” uses “baby” as an affectionate name for his partner, not necessarily a child.

The lyrics suggest that he hopes she might come back, but they do not tell us why she left or what she wants. His claim that he has found “peace of mind” may be a sincere moment of hope, or an effort to reassure himself. Likewise, “it can’t go wrong” sounds confident, but the repeated sadness makes that confidence seem fragile. The song leaves the relationship’s future unresolved.
