Lyrics meaning
The lyrics portray a journey through a landscape where modern vehicles and development collide with Aboriginal people and their land. The repeated image of animals being hit by a van gives the journey a careless, damaging quality. As the song moves between images of morning light, mining, and conflict, it becomes less like a simple travel scene and more like a criticism of people who arrive believing they can take control.
Several images suggest that harm is being overlooked. Mistaking a person for a tree implies that travelers fail to recognize Indigenous people until they are very close; the tree seeming to breathe makes that failure suddenly visible. โErase the raceโ points to the danger of removing a people from their land, while โdig for oreโ suggests that profit from the land is being placed above its inhabitants. The โdented vanโ is a small, concrete sign of the damage and disruption accompanying the journey.
The lyrics are forceful but not fully explained, and some phrases are deliberately strange or compressed. The cheerful-sounding refrain about golden light contrasts with the violence and dispossession described elsewhere, which may make the newcomersโ arrival sound falsely hopeful or self-congratulatory. The song can be read as condemning colonial exploitation, though its rapid, surreal images leave room for uncertainty about exactly who is speaking in each passage.
