Lyrics meaning

The song tells a comic, uneasy story about a poor musician who lives among society’s outcasts. They take in an abandoned girl and call her a princess. Years later, when she is thirteen, she tells the thirty-year-old musician she loves him and offers herself to him. He refuses, pointing to their age difference and the danger of accepting. She runs away in tears; the next morning, he leaves too. Passing the place twenty years later, he feels he may regret what happened.

The contrast between “princess” and the squalid neighborhood makes her name sound tender and fanciful rather than literal. The musician is called a “wreck clinging to his guitar,” an image of someone poor and worn down, whose music is his remaining attachment. His joking mention of a damp prison straw mattress expresses fear of punishment, but also helps keep the song’s tone light while the situation remains serious.

The refusal can be read as an act of responsibility: he recognizes that she is a child, despite her bold invitation. Yet the final hint of regret complicates the ending. It may suggest loneliness, nostalgia, or a rueful thought about a missed possibility; it does not necessarily mean he believes he should have accepted her offer. The song leaves that feeling unresolved, mixing humor with discomfort.
