Run For Home

The speaker looks back on a life of travel, excitement, and mistakes, but increasingly wants to return home. The repeated chorus makes this longing feel urgent: home is not just a place, but a source of comfort after a tiring, confusing journey. The mood shifts from restless adventure toward a strong desire for belonging.

Several phrases suggest the rougher side of life on the road. “Boys on the make and on the bum” describes people trying to get ahead as well as people down on their luck. “The downs that they take just to be free” may refer to difficult experiences or sacrifices made in pursuit of freedom. Calling himself a “buffoon” means he has acted foolishly, while “looned with them” suggests joining others in wild, silly behavior.

The song does not explain exactly what home means, or what the speaker has discovered. It could be a literal home, a relationship, or simply a quieter life away from noise and social performance. His dismissal of the girls he sees may express emotional distance rather than a judgment about them. Overall, the lyrics present travel as exciting but not fully satisfying: after seeing many places and people, the speaker feels drawn back to something familiar.
