Chipmunk Song

The lyrics are a playful Christmas performance by three excited singers. They look forward to the holiday, hope for particular toys, and ask for Christmas to arrive quickly. Their excitement builds through the repeated chorus, while the spoken exchanges add comic interruptions: the group is not quite as orderly as the person leading them would like.

The requested toys—a plane that “loops the loop” and a hula hoop—make the anticipation concrete and childlike. “We can hardly stand the wait” is an idiom meaning they are extremely impatient, not that they are literally unable to stand. The repeated plea, “Please Christmas, don’t be late,” treats Christmas as if it could hear them and choose when to arrive.

The song balances genuine eagerness with affectionate chaos. The singers say they have been good, but the teasing, corrections, and argument about singing again make the claim feel humorous rather than solemn. The ending is cut short by a jumble of voices, leaving it unclear whether the children are still performing or simply getting carried away. That messy finish suits the song’s playful mood.
