Lyrics meaning
The lyrics begin with a woman who feels so unattractive that she hides from daylight and longs for beauty. A speaker then asks a star to comfort her, calling her his beloved and pleading for her to feel less alone. The mood shifts from shame and isolation toward tenderness: by the end, he sees her as beautiful when he looks with his heart.
The “morning star” is an image of hope and kindness, asked to shine warmly on the woman and ease her pain. Light has a double meaning: daylight seems threatening because she fears being seen, while the star’s gentle light offers comfort. The repeated word “hässlich” (“ugly”) is harsh, but it may express the cruelty of judging someone only by appearance rather than a simple, neutral description.
The lyrics leave some uncertainty about the speaker’s attitude. He admits that people are drawn to beautiful things and says the woman is not conventionally beautiful, so his final praise may not erase the hurt caused by those judgments. Yet “seeing with the heart” suggests that love changes how he perceives her. The ending can be read as a sincere recognition of her worth—or as a bittersweet contrast between outward beauty and emotional closeness.
