Charlie and Ruby they lived next door
They had no children, they wanted more
But more wasn't coming in children or in life
Charlie was a dirt poor farmer and Ruby was a farmer's wife
Down with the evening news and up at dawn
Work boots overalls and railroad hat on
Scratching that rocky soil and choking out the weeds
"Hey Ruby, look what the Lord made from a handful of seeds"
Charlie and Ruby met in Junior High
Ruby did all the talking cause Charlie was the quiet kind
Charlie knew then what his toil in life would bring
Ruby finished high school; ruby loved to sing
Walk on the sunny side and wonder working power
Three part harmony and wildwood flower
Singing with her sisters in a family band
She let all that go when she took ol' Charlie's hand
ย
Walk on the sunny side and wonder working power
Two part harmony IN MY FINAL HOUR
ย
Charlie quit drinking in his later years
Except Fridays with the Masons and a couple of Christmas beers
Ruby held heavy 60 years against the yoke
Wheeling around her oxygen and stopping for a smoke
They held onto heaven and life beyond the sun
Held to each other when the long work day was done
Giving all they had 'til there was nothing left to give
Living their days til there were no more days to live
Charlie and Ruby they lived next door
They had no children they wanted more
But more wasn't comin' in children or in life
Charlie was a dirt poor farmer and Ruby was a farmer's wife
