The deeside came in but I was on and a-playing
He's landed at Brackley's Yates at the dawning of the day
"Saint Baron of Brackley, are ye within?"
The sharp swords doon at the Yates that'll guide your blood spin
The lady arose and to the window she went
She heard her kye lowing o'er hill and o'er bend
"Oh rise up, dear John, turn back your kye
They're o'er the hills a-running, they're skipping away"
"Come to your bed, Peggy, and let the kye run
For were I to gang oot I'd never get in"
Then she's cried on her women, they quickly came ben
"Take up rocks, bonnie lasses, and fight all like men"
"Oh I am but a woman to head you all try
Nor let these vile Highland men steal all our kye"
Then up got the Baron and cried for his grave
Says "Lady, I'll gang oot, to leave you I'm lath"
"Come kiss me, my Peggy, nor think that I'm sublime
For I may well gang oot but I'll never win time"
When the Baron of Brackley he rode through the close
A gallant a Baron e'er mounted a horse
Now there came with him but I riding thirty and three
It was main way from the Brackley but his brother and he
'Twas gallant a Gordon, 'tis never sword's draw
But against three and thirty was he and was twa
With sword and with agers they did him surround
And fierce bonnie Brackley with many a wound
Frae the head of the deep to the banks of the Spey
The Gordons they hawked him and hung him
"Oh come ye by Brackley and draw us in there
For so his pretty Peggy and she was taken no cheer
She was ransan and dancin' and singin' for joy
Howe'er but on that night she was teased with mine
She drank when Rockwind welcomed him by
She kept him till morning to her slain her good man"
Now there's grief in the kitchen but there's nothing more
For the Baron of Brackley is dead on the moor
But up spake his son on his goodness his knee
"If I live to be a man revenged I'll be"
