Tulsa Turnaround

The song presents a reckless narrator who regrets getting stoned because it leads him into romantic trouble. He has been involved with a woman in Omaha and is now being pursued by the sheriff and his deputy. The repeated chorus shifts attention from the chase to his memory of the woman: he recalls their excitement and the lessons he says he learned from her.

Several phrases are playful or suggestive rather than literal. “Turned me on and turned me down” can mean she excited him but also rejected him. “Fit me like a hand in a glove” describes a close, easy match, while “gotta get greasy” humorously suggests that getting what you want can involve mess or trouble. The “Tulsa Turnaround” sounds like a dance or sexual allusion, but the lyrics do not explain it precisely.

The narrator’s regret may be sincere, yet the lively repetition makes the story feel more comic than mournful. He blames being high for his behavior, while also remembering the encounter with pleasure and boasting about it. The lyrics leave unclear how serious the pursuit is, and whether the woman’s “hold” on him is affection, desire, or simply his exaggerated way of describing the experience.
