Carry On

The song moves from the shock of waking to find someone gone toward a determination to keep living. At first, the speaker accepts that each person must follow a separate path. Images of night passing and daylight filling the world suggest a change in mood: sadness remains possible, but a fresh start seems available. The later questions make the ending less settled, as the speaker still longs to understand and reach the other person.

“Carry on” means to continue despite difficulty, not to pretend that nothing hurts. The clearing sky and returning sun make hope feel like a gradual change in weather. “To sing the blues, you’ve got to live the tunes” suggests that sorrow is part of lived experience; feelings cannot be understood only from a distance. The line “we have no choice” can sound both encouraging and resigned: life goes on whether or not one feels ready.

The song holds two attitudes at once: letting someone go and still asking them to speak. “Love is coming to us all” offers a broad, hopeful belief, while the questions about happiness, sorrow, and why the lover ran show personal uncertainty. It is not clear whether the speaker expects a reunion or is simply struggling to accept the separation.
