Her parents asked me
"What's your daily job, me boy?"
I said "I made a life out
Of singing drinking songs"
For sure it wasn't what her da
Had wished for his daughter
"Oh Jaysus why she didn't take
A lawyer as her man?"
Yes me man, you're right, I'm penniless
And I never will retire
I'll spend the half of me year
On the road well far from here
But I'm not a cheater
But an honest, hopeless dreamer
I take the day for what it's worth
And do the best I can
I'm never tired of singing
To keep me far from thinking
So I happily forget all the troubles for a while
If your pockets are quite empty
Why don't you be more friendly
And spend the final quid
Paying for a round
ย
A good job, to be employed
Are probably great things
But what I enjoy the most now
Is strumming on me strings
I can tell you many stories
That are pretty much the same
But me greatest accomplishment
Is being myself again
So I apologize, gentleman
You're disappointed, I guess
But I'm pleased with what I have
That is nothing or maybe less
I don't claim to be right
Nor I don't know if I'm wrong
But for fortune or misfortune
This is everything I've got
I'm never tired of singing
To keep me far from thinking
So I happily forget all the troubles for a while
If your pockets are quite empty
Why don't be you more friendly
And spend the final quid
Paying for a round
ย
But one day when I have a son
I hope he becomes a lawyer
'Cause the life of the musician
Is hard and tough enough
I will take him aside a while
And I'll whisper in his ear
"Oh Danny Boy do you want
To end up like your old man?"
I'm never tired of singing
To keep me far from thinking
So I happily forget all the troubles for a while
If your pockets are quite empty
Why don't be you more friendly
And spend the final quid
Paying for a round
I'm never tired of singing
To keep me far from thinking
So I happily forget all the troubles for a while
If your pockets are quite empty
Why don't be you more friendly
And spend the final quid
Paying for a round
