Lyrics meaning
The lyrics describe people whose hopes and voices seem to be worn down by disappointment. The speaker addresses someone who has been hurt and misled, then shifts attention to that personโs mother, who also appears trapped. The repeated questions about dreams and the point of trying create a mood of helplessness. By the end, the speaker sounds frustrated as well as concerned: they have tried to reach the other person, but feel unheard.
Several images suggest this loss of freedom. โThe world gets in your wayโ makes life sound like an obstacle blocking someoneโs plans. A โsmall and fadingโ voice suggests that the person is becoming less able to express themselves. The line about the mother loving the father because she has โnowhere to goโ implies that her relationship may be shaped by dependence or lack of choices, rather than affection alone.
The lyrics leave some details uncertain. The โtheyโ who tell lies and press their lips against the person are not identified, and the affection in that image could feel comforting or manipulative. The speakerโs claim to see through the person may show insight, but it may also reflect frustration or a belief that they understand more than the other person does. The song can therefore be read as both an expression of care and a portrait of people caught in patterns they struggle to change.
