Deal

The lyrics describe someone reflecting on choices, risks, and the high cost of both success and failure. The repeated advice to act slowly suggests caution in an uncertain life. A warmer, more personal feeling appears when the speaker addresses someone who has cared for them; leaving that person behind seems painful. The song balances restless experience with affection and reluctance.

The language of cards and gambling offers a central metaphor: “watch each card you play” suggests thinking carefully before making decisions, while waiting for a “deal” to come around implies that chances may arrive in their own time. The claim that winning costs a lot, and losing even more, makes every choice feel consequential. “Burn off both your ears” is an exaggerated way of saying the speaker has too many wild or shocking stories to tell.

The refrain can sound like advice to be patient and not waste an opportunity, but it does not promise that waiting will lead to success. The speaker’s years of gambling may suggest hard-earned experience, or may simply emphasize a life of risk. Likewise, the “deal” could mean a specific opportunity, a relationship, or life’s changing circumstances. The lyrics leave these meanings open, presenting uncertainty itself as part of the message.
