Mission

The speaker admires people who turn powerful ideas into creative work and purposeful action. Their songs, writing, pictures, and buildings seem to come from a special inner drive. At first, the speaker wishes they had the same ambition. Later, the admiration becomes more complicated: pursuing a vision can bring achievement, but it can also demand great effort and make a person feel trapped by obsession.

The repeated image of a flame suggests an idea or desire that must be kept alive until it inspires action. “Spirits fly on dangerous missions” compares ambitious people to adventurers: they aim high, but their pursuit carries risks. The “lifeless screen” may suggest that art can bring light and feeling into something otherwise empty or dull. These images present creativity as both inspiring and consuming.

The song does not simply say that ambition is good or bad. The speaker recognizes its power and seems to envy those who possess it, yet also wonders whether their lives might be difficult enough that they would trade them for something ordinary. The phrase “fabulous price” implies that pursuing a personal ideal has serious costs, though the nature of those costs is left open. A “mission” may give life meaning, but it can also become an obsession that limits freedom.
