Lyrics meaning

The lyrics portray Billy and Judy as young people who feel confined by their town and by limited choices. Saturday night briefly offers excitement and escape, but boredom, family conflict, and worries about work quickly return. The mood moves between restless energy and frustration, ending on the repeated sense that both have been trapped.

The โ€œrat trapโ€ is a metaphor for a life that seems to catch people before they can find a way out. Images of a polluted, run-down place make the town feel physically unhealthy as well as emotionally bleak. The traffic-light commands, โ€œwalkโ€ and โ€œdonโ€™t walk,โ€ echo the rules people are told to follow; the repeated signals make ordinary guidance sound controlling. Judyโ€™s small amount of money and plan to work long hours suggest how narrow her imagined future feels.

Still, the lyrics leave some room for possibility: Billy is urged to โ€œmake itโ€ if he wants it badly enough, and he is told to find a way out. Yet that encouragement sits beside his claim that the trap has already caught them. The song may be criticizing social limits, or showing how despair can make escape seem impossible. It does not settle whether Billy and Judy are truly unable to leave, or whether they have begun to believe that they are.
