Lyrics meaning

The speaker says that violent remarks were meant as jokes, but they have clearly caused trouble or fear. The repeated claim of joking sounds like an excuse that may not fully repair the harm. The mood moves between bravado and regret: the speaker admits that their โ€œbig mouthโ€ has struck again and wonders whether they deserve to belong among other people.

โ€œBigmouthโ€ is an informal way to describe someone who talks too much or says things they should not. โ€œStrikes againโ€ makes the speech sound like a repeated attack, suggesting this is not the first time the speaker has hurt someone with words. The comparison with Joan of Arc being burned is exaggerated and darkly comic: the speaker portrays themself as suffering for their behavior, though the comparison is deliberately out of proportion. The melting Discman and Mega Drive add a strangely ordinary, comic detail to this dramatic image.

The lyrics can be read as self-mockery, but they also leave open how sincere the remorse is. The extreme threats may be theatrical rather than literal, yet they still make the speaker seem alarming. Saying โ€œIโ€™ve got no right to take my place in the Human raceโ€ could express real shame, or it could be another exaggerated line from someone who is uncomfortable facing the consequences of their words.
