Pictures Of Home

The speaker is isolated in a cold, high place and longs for home. At first, they call out and hope someone will answer, but only their own words come back. The mood develops from confusion and loneliness toward a painful awareness that they may be trapped by their circumstances—or even by their own choices.

The “pictures of home” suggest memories or imagined scenes that offer comfort but also sharpen the speaker’s sense of absence. The mountain, snow, and eagles create a stark, empty setting, while the returning echo makes the speaker’s solitude feel complete. Calling the place a “prison” of their own making implies that the speaker may have helped create the situation they now cannot escape.

The lyrics leave the exact situation unclear: the speaker could be physically lost, emotionally cut off, or both. Their “hero” image contrasts with having no one to admire them, suggesting that achievement or a grand self-image cannot replace human connection. The references to being found and to a crow’s call add unease, but do not explain whether rescue or danger is coming.
