The lyrics tell a light, comic story about a man who meets a woman in Paris and becomes attracted to her. He tries to invite her to leave with him and later asks for a kiss, but they do not understand each other’s languages. His excitement grows into frustration, while her laughter suggests she may see the situation differently.

The contrast between the German verses and the repeated French refrain reinforces the language barrier at the heart of the story. “Standing in flames” is an image for intense desire, not literal fire. The woman’s answer being “French” means the narrator cannot understand her words; later, the song reverses the problem when she fails to understand his request.

The refrain’s “How are you?” and “so-so” sounds playful, but it does not resolve the couple’s misunderstanding. The repeated lines about not understanding love and staying the night can be heard as romantic wishes, though they may also sound comically overconfident beside the narrator’s inability to communicate.
