Lyrics meaning
The speaker remembers growing up in the far north, surrounded by the sea and shaped by a family life connected to fishing. At first, the place feels familiar and even pleasant, but as a teenager he worries that staying will limit his future. He leaves for the south, expecting something better. The emotional movement is from affection and restlessness to disappointment and homesickness.
The sea, dunes, and gulls are vivid images of the speaker’s home and childhood. His father’s work as a sailor makes the weather matter: a storm keeps him from going out to sea, and the lighthouse keeper’s joke, “No panic on the Titanic,” lightens the moment. The phrase “the yellow isn’t it either” means that the sunny south is not as wonderful as he had hoped; the heat and sweating make the contrast comic as well as real.
The lyrics suggest that leaving home does not automatically bring a better life. The speaker once feared becoming only a sailor or farmer, but now misses the northern landscape he had taken for granted. His longing may be partly for the place itself and partly for the ease of childhood. The ending does not say he will return; it simply shows that his feelings about home have changed.
