I knew at 13 when she gave me butterflies
Her head on my chest, looking up with knowing eyes
I saw the confidence that flowed in her veins
I'm still working on believing I could be the same
There are smiling faces marching, there's a rainbow in the sky
There's a flag that wants to honor me and I want to wave it high
There are roads that those before us paved
With love and careful thought
There's a life with no exhaustion from being what I'm not
But I'm not there yet
And it's okay, it's okay
That I'm not there yet
I'll take my time
I'm not there yet
And it's okay that I'm not there yet
The world can wait for me
ย
I know that I am loved to my core
Even if not by the ones I hoped for
In the meantime, I'll watch who I grow into day by day
And be proud of her either way
There are open arms awaiting, there's no hatred in this place
There's a room where I can dance with pure abandon and feel safe
There are conversations that just might take a little extra care
There's a history and weight I'll have to bear
But I'm not there yet
And it's okay, it's okay
That I'm not there yet
I'll take my time
I'm not there yet
And it's okay that I'm not there yet
The world can wait for me
(I'll wait, I'll wait, I'll wait)
The world can wait for me
(I'll wait, I'll wait, I'll wait)
The world can wait for me
(I'll wait, it's okay, it's okay) oh-oh
(I'll wait, it's okay, it's okay) 'til I'm ready, I will wait
(I'll wait, it's okay, it's okay, I'll wait)
