Strangelove

The lyrics describe a love that feels intense but unstable, moving between pleasure and pain. The speaker admits to wrongdoing and to sometimes becoming distant, yet asks the other person to accept this pattern and take part in it. The repeated questions make the relationship sound like a cycle: each person may give pain and receive it in return.

“Strange highs and strange lows” suggests sharp changes between excitement and sadness. The image of a “sea of love” that is not enough, followed by a “river full,” turns affection into something that can be measured in huge amounts; the speaker seems to want more and more. “Out of reach” means emotionally or practically hard to contact, while “stray” hints at wandering away from the relationship or its rules.

The speaker’s honesty is not the same as a clear promise to change. They confess to sin and distance, but also say they are willing to learn and hope to make the partner happy. This leaves the relationship open to more than one reading: it may be a frank acceptance of mutual flaws, or a troubling bargain in which hurt is treated as part of love. The lyrics do not settle whether the repeated pain is playful, serious, or both.
