Go Go Go

The lyrics celebrate Johnny’s lively guitar playing and the excitement it creates. The mood grows from a playful invitation to perform into a scene where the crowd cannot sit still, then ends with even skeptical parents deciding to hear him live. The repeated “go, go, go” sounds like both a cheer and a push to keep the music moving.

Several images make the performance feel energetic and comic. Johnny’s “duckwalk” and movements like a “locomotive” turn guitar playing into a physical show, while the animal sounds add playful noise rather than a serious description. “Record hop” means a social dance where people gather to dance to records; here, the audience’s reaction makes Johnny the center of attention. The references to jazz musicians and songs suggest a mix of musical styles, though the exact meaning of “mixing” them is not fully explained.

The song presents Johnny’s unusual sound as something that may seem “goofy” at first but becomes enjoyable. Papa’s change of mind is affectionate and humorous: he does not claim to understand the playing, yet he is willing to take Mama to the gig. The lyrics may be praising musical skill, showmanship, or simply the fun of a performance; they leave room for all three readings.
