Santa Rosa

The speaker longs to return to Santa Rosa after a difficult time away. They say their dreams have failed, and the journey has left them tired. The repeated promise to come back gives the song a hopeful direction: the speaker is moving from regret and exhaustion toward the comfort of home, although they are not yet certain how they will be received.

The road represents the speaker’s journey away from home, but they wish it would lead them back to where they feel they belong. The “old house” and friends stand for familiar people and places the speaker misses. “Set out to roam” means leaving to travel or wander, and the speaker now regrets that choice.

The return is hopeful but not completely carefree. The speaker wonders what their family will think because they have changed, and whether their friends will still be there. Still, they believe they can get along in the end. Santa Rosa may be a literal hometown or a symbol of belonging; the lyrics do not tell us what happened during the time away.
