Stainsby Girls

The lyrics look back on falling in love with a particular girl from Stainsby. The speaker contrasts her with other girls, describing different habits and ways of treating people, before admitting that his feelings for this girl were powerful enough to hurt him. The repeated declaration of love gives the song a fond, slightly wistful feeling: although time has passed, the memory remains vivid.

“Keep you hanging on the line” suggests making someone wait, perhaps without giving a clear answer. “Stole your heart” is a common expression for making someone fall in love, while saying she could “break it in two” adds the idea that deep affection also brings the risk of heartbreak. The image of “deepest water Stainsby blue” may connect the girl or the memory to a strong, distinctive shade of blue; it also suggests depth and intensity.

The song’s comparisons are playful, but they should not necessarily be taken as firm judgments about all girls. The speaker may be using broad, teasing contrasts to make this one person seem unforgettable. “Running straight and running true” could suggest honesty or a lasting feeling, though its exact meaning is open. The lyrics do not tell us what happened between them; they leave both the romance and the hurt in the past, held in memory.
