Lyrics meaning
The speaker addresses Johnny with affection, but also recognizes that he is unreliable and self-centered. She thinks about him constantly, while he seems to seek her out when it suits him and then leaves her feeling hurt. Even so, she says she would love him just as much if he behaved more courteously. The mood mixes longing, complaint, and a playful kind of resignation.
The repeated line “you are no angel” means Johnny is far from perfect, not that he is literally evil. “You fall asleep on my sorrow” suggests that he ignores her sadness, as if her pain does not trouble him. The speaker also describes him waking her at night because he is bored and wants “a different life,” implying that he seeks excitement or a change without considering the effect on her.
In the final verse, her complaint expands from Johnny to men in general: she suggests that men can find women to praise them, then quickly forget those women when they lose interest. Yet “you must forgive everything” may be teasing rather than a serious rule. The song leaves open whether she truly accepts Johnny’s behavior, or uses humor and affection to express frustration she cannot quite let go of.
