Several images express this distress. “Travelling in panic, all directions blind” suggests not just physical confusion but being unable to see a clear choice or future. The contrast between the “burning sun” and the “emptiness” he comes from shows how strongly he longs for warmth, life, or comfort. “Darkness is the only sound” mixes the senses: darkness cannot literally make a sound, so the phrase suggests that silence and fear fill his world.

The traveler may be understood literally as someone stranded far from home, but the strange time and “visions of eternity” also allow a more symbolic reading: he could represent anyone who feels isolated, displaced, or afraid of a future they cannot reach.
