Softly and Tenderly

The lyrics present Jesus as gently inviting people who feel tired, distant, or burdened by wrongdoing to return to him. The repeated call to “come home” gives the song a reassuring, welcoming mood. It moves from an invitation, through questions about why someone might delay, to the promise of mercy and pardon.

“Home” is more than a physical place here: it suggests returning to a loving relationship and finding rest. Jesus is pictured as waiting and watching at the “portals,” a doorway image that makes the invitation seem open and personal. The repeated words “softly,” “tenderly,” and “earnestly” describe a call that is both gentle and serious. “Weary” can mean physically tired, but it also suggests emotional or spiritual exhaustion.

The song speaks from a Christian view of sin, forgiveness, and salvation, presenting mercy as available even to those who have done wrong. Its language may feel comforting to listeners who share that faith; others may hear it more generally as an invitation to seek forgiveness or begin again. The lyrics do not describe what returning involves, so “home” can remain a spiritual promise rather than a specific action.
