It Doesn't Have To Be This Way

The lyrics argue that suffering and unfair conditions are not inevitable. They move between frustration and encouragement: the speaker feels worn down by what they see, especially a child going hungry, but repeatedly urges someone to speak up and demand change. The repeated refrain turns a bleak complaint into a call for action.

The “hungry child” gives the song’s social criticism a concrete human focus. “Whose joker is wild” suggests that the child’s circumstances are uncertain or stacked against them, like a risky card in a game. “Ask for more” means more than requesting extra goods: in the mention of society, it implies demanding better treatment or support. “Had enough of the sunshine” sounds ironic; sunshine usually suggests happiness, but here it may stand for a cheerful surface that hides real problems.

The lyrics do not specify exactly who is responsible or what change is needed. “You’ve only got yourselves to blame” may challenge people who accept an unfair “game,” though it could also sound like blame directed at those suffering. The repeated, emphatic lines leave the message broad: things can be different, but people may need to recognize the problem and insist on more.
