Werewolves of London

The lyrics turn a frightening monster into a comic, strangely ordinary character. The werewolf walks around London looking for food, drinks cocktails, and appears in fashionable places. At the same time, reports of violence and warnings about letting him inside give the song a darker edge. The mood shifts between playful amusement and mock alarm.

Several details create the humor through contrast. A “Chinese menu” and beef chow mein make the monster’s hunt sound like an everyday meal. “His hair was perfect” pokes fun at the image of a polished, stylish werewolf, while “I’d like to meet his tailor” treats a dangerous creature as if he were simply well dressed. “Ran amuck” means caused trouble or behaved wildly, and the warning to stay away makes the song briefly sound like a conventional monster story.

The lyrics may be understood as a parody of horror: familiar werewolf imagery is mixed with restaurants, nightlife, and celebrity-like appearances. But the violence is not entirely harmless; the mention of a woman being mutilated and the final command to “draw blood” keep a threatening note beneath the jokes. The song does not explain whether the werewolf is meant to symbolize anything beyond this amusing clash of horror and everyday life, so a simple comic reading is well supported, while deeper meanings remain open.
